Our induction ceremony, where new members receive the Society's certificate and pin, is held each fall. The Society also offers competitive scholarships and support for study abroad. These include opportunities to present to national or regional conferences, to publish in Society journals for critical or creative writing, and to develop leadership skills as a chapter officer or project leader. Our chapter holds events through the year, and the national Society's webpage,, offers a range of activities that are available to members. MFA students are also eligible for selection. To be eligible, a student must declare an English major or English or Creative Writing minor attain junior status and successfully complete at least two Stetson English or Creative Writing courses beyond first-year writing with a B average or better in the major/minor and overall. Selection to Sigma Tau Delta recognizes high standards of achievement as a major or minor in English or Creative Writing. Stetson University's chapter, Gamma Zeta, was founded in 1956, and it counts among its alumni writers, editors, teachers, and lovers of literature around the world. Our own Psi Sigma chapter charges no additional membership dues, and the chapter is a recognized JMU student organization, eligible to apply for student organization funds to support its activities each year.Īs an undergraduate, if you meet the core academic requirements of (1) at least a 3.0 GPA in English coursework (with a minimum of two courses completed here) and (2) a minimum of three semesters of undergraduate coursework completed (3) with at least a 3.0 GPA overall, and (4) have a JMU English professor willing to support your application, then you are welcome to apply for membership! Sigma Tau Delta is an international English honor society. To this end the English Department has set aside funds to help subsidize the one-time Sigma Tau Delta membership fee this year (first priority to English majors and minors but not necessarily restricted). While our chapter has sadly had to curtail most of its on-campus activities in the last two years, we are now anxious to become an even bigger and more diverse and inclusive presence at JMU than ever before, and we’re hopeful we will be able to move forward in the year ahead. Membership in Sigma Tau Delta also offers scholarship and publishing opportunities and the chance to participate in a members-only national conference with prestigious invited speakers.
